PFLAG Granby has officially launched! The group has formally affiliated with PFLAG National and is now a recognized chapter of the largest national organization supporting the LGBTQ+ community. With close to 350 chapters across the country, PFLAG Granby joins with hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ+ people, parents, families and allies to provide much-needed leadership working every day to ensure LGBTQ+ people everywhere are safe, celebrated, empowered and loved.
PFLAG Granby will offer services organized around three main pillars: Support, Educate, Advocate. The group will begin offering monthly support meetings in October, which will provide a safe and empathetic space for members of the LGBTQ+ community, including parents, families and friends, to share their experiences and concerns while fostering a deeper understanding of LGBTQ+ issues.
Attendance at meetings is confidential, and open to anyone who feels they can benefit from participating. Membership in PFLAG Granby is not required to attend, but pre-registration is required via the chapter website Granby.PFLAG.org, where people can also find dates, locations and times. Both in person and virtual meetings will be offered. A trained facilitator will help keep the meeting on track. The theme for October meetings is Building Community.
In the coming months, PFLAG Granby will continue to gather for monthly hikes, and a Thanksgiving of the Heart event will be sponsored in November. The chapter is also working on programming to educate the public on LGBTQ+ issues, as well as organizing advocacy efforts. Through outreach and advocacy, the group aims to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes and create a safe space where everyone is respected and embraced for who they are. The organization is open to everyone, not just Granby residents, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or family status.
Membership dues have been set at $30 per household for the chapter’s first year and includes everything offered locally as well as membership with PFLAG National. Signups are through the website. Individuals who may not wish to join but would like to help the chapter through donations can also contribute via the website.
