Adult Programs
Watercolor Basics: Wednesdays, Oct. 1, 8, 22 and 29; 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m.; FHC Upper Level. This free watercolor workshop, led by Douglas Williams, is open to beginners and advanced beginners interested in learning foundational watercolor techniques and the seven elements of design. Attendees must bring their own supplies.
Fall Fitness Sampler: Mondays, October 6, 13, 20 and 27; 9–9:45 a.m. at GPL. Rise and shine for a low-impact fitness experience. Enjoy a different exercise modality each week with fitness instructor Aubrey Schulz, including yoga, bodyweight strength training, core stability training and fitness fusion. Bring a yoga mat or towel and wear comfortable clothing.
Salmon Brook and Lower Farmington River: Tuesday, Oct. 7, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at GPL. Join members of the Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook Wild and Scenic Committee for a presentation featuring this important natural resource. Special attention will be given to Salmon Brook, which flows through the towns of Hartland, Granby and East Granby. Learn why the waterway is special and how it’s being protected.
Salmon Brook Quilt Exhibit: Oct. 2–Oct. 31; during library open hours at GPL. The Lower Farmington River and Salmon Brook Quilt Project portrays 20 locations along the Farmington River and seven locations along Salmon Brook. The public is invited to view the 15-foot-long Salmon Brook portion of the quilt during regular library hours. See related article on page 14.
Native Pollination and DIY Seed Balls: Thursday, Oct. 9, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at GPL. Master gardeners Beth Ann Loveland Sennett and Susan Grew will explain the pollination process, identify important local pollinators and the challenges they face, and offer ways to support and sustain them. Attendees are invited to make native pollinator plant seed balls to scatter in places in need of native plants. No fee.
Introduction To Knitting: Wednesdays, Oct. 8, 22 and Nov. 5, 1:30–3 p.m.; FHC Upper Level. Beginning knitters and those who need a refresher will learn basic knitting skills, including casting on, binding off, knit and purl stitch, stockinette and garter knitting. Learn in this three-part series and take home a finished item to wear this fall. Yarn and needles provided or bring your own. This craft program requires a $5 deposit to hold the reservation.
Welcome Wags with Emmie: Monday, Oct. 13, 1–2 p.m. at GPL. Catch some pawsitive vibes with our furry friend Emmie, a well-mannered Havanese with a gentle disposition and soft, silky coat. Reduce stress and raise mood-boosting endorphins with a visit with Emmie and her handler Kathryn. Register or drop in.
Monday Movie Matinee, Killers Of The Flower Moon: Monday, Oct. 13, 1:30–5 p.m. at GPL. David Grann’s broadly lauded best-selling book, Killers of the Flower Moon, inspired the gripping historical drama directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro. Based on true events, the film centers on a string of murders targeting members of the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma, after oil is discovered on their land. Rated R for violence, some grisly images, and language; run time 3 hours 26 minutes. There will be a brief intermission.
Sound Energy Healing: Tuesday, Oct. 14, 5:30–6:45 p.m. at GPL. Sound energy healing is an ancient practice that has been shown to reduce stress, enhance mental clarity and promote emotional balance. Practitioner Julia Nadolny uses crystal bowls, tuning forks and a gong to affect a profound sense of relaxation. Adults are invited to dress comfortably and participate by using a yoga mat or a chair. Free.
Worm Warning, Why These Wigglers Are Not Wanted: Tuesday, Oct. 21, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at GPL. Granby Conservation Commission member David Desiderato shares important information about the jumping worm. Learn how to identify this non-native, invasive species that is voraciously consuming organic matter, degrading soil structure, and leaving it prone to erosion. Learn methods to remove them. Sponsored by Granby Public Library, Granby Land Trust and Granby Conservation Commission.
Witches In Connecticut: Thursday, Oct. 23, 6:30–7:30 p.m. at GPL. The trials and executions of witches in Connecticut predated the more famous Salem witch panic by over 40 years. Hear the stories of some of the women and men accused, tried and executed as witches and learn how Connecticut successfully controlled the spread of witch accusations long before Salem erupted in panic and violence.
Hooked On Stitches, Knit and Crochet Group: Saturday, Oct. 25, 10 a.m.–12 p.m.; FHC Upper Level. Adults, teens 16+. The difference between experienced and new knitters is that the experienced knitter makes bigger mistakes faster. All skill levels are welcome!
The Big Rise, A Sourdough Experience: Saturday, Oct. 26, 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. at GPL. Enjoy an introduction to sourdough breadmaking. See, touch and smell real examples as you learn to make a great sourdough loaf. Isabelle Laufer offers a tasty presentation, complete with a show and tell of her preferred baking equipment.
Makerspace Programs at Cossitt
Certified Volunteers Wanted: Become a certified volunteer at the Granby Public Library Makerspace. Share your skills, learn new ones and help others explore the exciting world of technology, creativity and hands-on making. Makerspace Equipment Training: Adults, Teens 16+ and youth ages 10 and up with an adult are invited to visit the library’s makerspace and learn to use the 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing and embroidery machines, sublimation printer, vinyl cutter, mug and bottle presses, and all manner of digitizing equipment. Let’s Make, Monster Bookends: Wednesday, Oct. 8, 4:30– 5:30 p.m. or Saturday, Oct. 13, 10:30–11:30 a.m.; FHC Makerspace Lower Level. Adults, Teens 16+. Assemble the Monster Bookend of your nightmares using cardboard pieces prepared by our Glowforge laser cutter, official library bookends and other tools available in our makerspace. No fee.
Sew Simple, Hemming Jeans and Dress Pants: Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1:30–3 p.m.; FHC Makerspace Lower Level. Adults, Teens 16+. Learn two versatile hemming techniques in this hands-on workshop. Instructor Sandy Salazar will show you how to hem jeans while preserving the original hem, as well as how to use a sewing machine’s blind stitch for a clean, professional finish on dress pants. Bring your own pants to practice on—no fee.

Something About The Author: Monday, Oct. 6, 1:30–2:30 p.m. at GPL. Discussing Old God’s Time by Sebastian Barry. Set in 1990s Ireland, the novel follows a recently retired police officer. John Rusnock leads the discussion.
Sci/Fi Fantasy Book Club: Wednesday, Oct. 22, 6–7 p.m. at GPL. Discussing Out of the Dark by David Weber. The galactic Hegemony like stability but Carnivorous Shongairi like to disturb. Then the Hegemony encounter humans who are almost as bad as the Shongairi. Jim Gorman leads the discussion.
Children’s Programs at GPL
Halloween Costume Swap: Thursday, Oct. 2; 10 a.m.–12 p.m. for ticket holders only; 12:30–2:30 p.m. and 5–6 p.m. open to all while supplies last. Ages: birth–10 years. The costumes collected in September are ready for their next spooky adventure. Pick out a “new-to-you” Halloween costume—perfect for trick-or-treating night. Limit one costume per child.

Halloween Preschool Parade: Friday, Oct. 31, 10:30–11 a.m. Ages: birth–5 years. Join us for a not-so-spooky Halloween celebration just for little ones! Children are invited to wear their costumes and enjoy a festive story, fun music, and a small treat. Don’t miss the mini parade through the library—it’s a sweet way to celebrate the season!
Baby Rhyme Time: Tuesdays, Oct. 7, 14 and 21, 10:30–11 a.m. Ages: up to 14–months (non-walkers). Babies with caregivers are invited to an interactive lap-sit program featuring a story, nursery rhymes, songs and baby sign language.
Toddler Time: Thursdays, Oct. 9, 16 and 23; 10:30–11 a.m. Ages: 15–24 months (walkers). Toddlers with caregivers are invited to an interactive program featuring a story, nursery rhymes, songs and sign language.

Nightfall Stories and Stretch: Thursdays, Oct. 9, 16 and 23; 6–6:30 p.m. Ages: 4–7 years. Children are invited to an independent mindfulness program featuring stories, stretches and an interactive activity.

Coding Crew: Mondays, Oct. 6, 20 and 27 (no Oct. 13); 6–6:30 p.m. Grades: 3–5. Join us for a hands-on, three-part coding adventure using Ozobots—tiny robots with big personalities! Learn how to guide your bot through twirls, turns and tricky challenges using hand-drawn color codes. As your skills grow, you’ll help your bot search for hidden treasure on a pirate map and engage in games.
