From standards to success: curriculum in Granby Public Schools

Instruction in Granby Public Schools is guided by our Vision of a Graduate: we aim for every student to become a resourceful learner and an effective communicator who contributes positively at the local, national and global levels. Our curriculum is based on state standards that outline the knowledge and skills students should acquire during their K–12 education in order to graduate ready for college and career.

Curriculum at a Glance

Curriculum is the collective content and literacies students need to achieve identified learning outcomes. Teacher leaders and certified staff collaborate to design units of study that include the standards, key concepts, skills, and assessments. These units are taught in classrooms with oversight from department chairs and building principals.

To make this information accessible to families and community members, Curriculum at a Glance documents are available on the district website. These grade-level overviews highlight the units of study and standards being addressed from kindergarten to eighth grade. New this year, Curriculum at a Glance documents were expanded to include unified arts classes such as art, music, physical education and technology. At the high school level, this information is also found in each course syllabus. The syllabi were shared with students and parents at the GMHS open house in September and we are working to have all syllabi linked to the program of studies that can also be found on our website.

Continuous Review and Growth

Curriculum development is an ongoing process. This year marks the formal start of a five-year Curriculum Review Cycle, which ensures each subject area is reviewed on a rotating basis. The first to undergo this process is K–12 social studies. The review will look closely at both what we teach and how we teach, including content, assessment, teaching practices, communication and resources. Once the review is complete it will be publicly presented to the board of education later this year.

Parents as Partners

Granby teachers thoughtfully select resources to reflect the diversity of our students and community, ensuring materials are age-appropriate and engaging. Books and texts are chosen to serve as both mirrors—helping children see themselves—and windows—offering perspectives into the lives of others.

We view parents and guardians as essential partners in this work. Families are encouraged to review resources, ask questions and stay informed about the learning taking place in classrooms. Together, we can provide meaningful learning experiences for every student.
