Granby Public Schools Building Facilities Department has made major strides this past summer, working to improve buildings and facilities.

In preparation for the new school year, the facilities team has ensured that school environments are clean, safe, and welcoming for students and staff. They have thoroughly deep-cleaned classrooms and other school facilities.

The Wells Road Intermediate School gazebo had been in a state of disrepair for several years and could not be used to its full potential. Unfortunately, quotes for repairs were cost prohibitive at nearly $20,000 for labor and materials. However, this summer, under the direction of Director of Facilities Christopher DeGray much of the work was done in-district. The gazebo received a much-needed makeover including a new roof, seating, handrails, ramp and painting. Additionally, the picnic tables in the courtyard were repaired and painted. This renewed space will be greatly enjoyed by the Wells Road community at a total cost of $3,500 for materials.

Ongoing investigations into the high school athletic turf field sinkholes, included additional testing to further determine the depths and quality of soil compaction, as well as the potential for future sinkholes before moving forward with plans for track and turf field upgrades. The results of this testing and comprehensive plans for a new turf field and track will be presented to the Granby Capital Program Priority Advisory Committee (CPPAC) this fall.

Additional upgrades have been made to the high school boys’ locker room, providing fenced off storage and a secure coach’s office space as well as new helmet/backpack hooks to accommodate student athletes and improve the organization of athletic gear. Current lockers couldn’t fit all the football helmets, so the surplus was often left on floors and benches, creating trip hazards. Working with the athletics department, facilities staff provided solutions to optimize the space for a total cost of $415 compared to external vendor quotes of approximately $2,000.

These are some of the projects that reflect the department’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high quality learning environments. Special recognition and sincere appreciation go to Granby Public Schools Facilities Director Christopher DeGray, whose leadership and oversight have been instrumental in bringing these projects to fruition.
