Open auditions for choral singers

Do you have a love and passion for choral music? Do you dream about adding your own voice to amazing sounds that move your soul? Then you are the person we are seeking to join us!

Auditions will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 1018 Farmington Avenue in West Hartford, on Saturday, Sept. 6, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 7, 2:30–4:30 p.m.

Qualified singers who can accurately and independently prepare music and commit to a number of rehearsals and concerts during our multi-concert season will be considered.

We also invite qualified students to participate in an internship program; no audition is required, only a recommendation from a current music teacher. Flank Steak Dinner

The North Canton Community United Methodist Church will host its Flank Steak Dinner on Friday, Sept. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. Menu includes flank steak with mushroom sauce, roasted potatoes, zucchini and sliced tomatoes with balsamic vinaigrette and basil, dessert and coffee. Takeout available. Adults $22, children 6–12 $15, under 6 free. The church is located at 3 Case Street in Canton.

Free Lifelong Learning open house

Presidents’ College Lifelong Learning at the University of Hartford will hold a Get to Know Us event on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with refreshments and jazz. Watch as Director Michele Troy interviews professors about what inspired their non-credit fall lectures or mini-courses (two–four sessions). See if the program’s offerings are the right fit for you. Topics include extreme weather, cryptocurrency, the Supreme Court, Afro-Cuban jazz, stories from Homer’s Odyssey, film, discussions of the Wicked films and Broadway show, moral heroes, national and global politics and much more. Join us for lectures on the Hartford Stage production of Rope and then attend a performance. Medicare Workshop

The East Granby Public Library will offer Medicare 2026: Understanding Changes and Coverage Options on Tuesday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. All area residents are welcome. The library is at 24 Center Street, within the town center complex.

The father/daughter team of Lou and Jessica Pelletier will help participants navigate the complexities of Medicare in 2026, including the Parts (A–Hospital; B–Physician and Outpatient Coverage; D–Drug Coverage) and the important new changes to Medicare drug plans rolling out in 2026.

The Pelletiers will walk you through the pros and cons of Medicare Supplement Plans and Medicare Advantage Plans, and help you understand IRMAA (Income Related Monthly Adjusted Amount), Medicare Savings Programs, and the importance of having a Medical Power of Attorney. This workshop is perfect for seniors, their adult children, and anyone who wants to understand how to make smart, informed decisions about Medicare in 2026.

Singers sought

The Farmington Valley Chorale welcomes new members for the 2025-26 season. FVC rehearses Sunday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. at Simsbury United Methodist Church, 799 Hopmeadow Street. The first rehearsal is Sept. 7, with open rehearsals on Sept. 7, 14 and 21. Interested singers please plan on arriving at 6:15 p.m. on the evenings of open rehearsals so that Artistic Director Ellen Gilson Voth can hear your voice in a brief tryout for placement in the correct vocal section.
