Before summer gets into full swing, it is a great time to visit with our friends and family by going out for ice cream, taking a walk on the rail trail or meeting up at the park.
Additionally, it is the season to recognize the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in our Armed Forces. We honor and mourn our fallen service members. The annual Memorial Day Parade that is organized by the Granby American Legion, Post 182, was on Monday, May 25. Two 5th grade students from Wells Road School were chosen to be the parade color guards. Congratulations to Joshua Peterson, Jr. and Ansley Koteen.
Granby’s Public Works Department held its Annual Open House on May 16. There was continual traffic to shred paper. Special thanks to the Granby Lion’s Club for sponsoring the paper shredding and staffing the volunteers! Additionally, almost four rolling containers from Helpsy were filled with textiles collected for recycling. Thanks to all who came out.
An exciting event offered by the Granby Senior Center this month will be a trip to the reopening of the Old Drake Hill Flower Bridge. The bridge, built in 1892 and located in Simsbury, is an amazing metal truss flower bridge spanning the Farmington River. Join the group on June 22 (rain date June 23) as the Flower Bridge Committee offers a 20-minute interactive presentation on the history and transformation of this one-lane car bridge into a pedestrian-only flower bridge. After a tour, there will be time for an outdoor box lunch from Fitzgerald’s Foods, delivered to Hop Brook Landing Park where you may sit in the shade of the new pavilion beside the Farmington River.
