At the April 20 Board of Selectmen meeting, First Selectman Mark Fiorentino presented Granby’s long-time and much beloved UPS driver, Ray Haack, with a plaque honoring his 24 years of service to the people of Granby.

The proclamation noted how Haack’s friendliness, kindness and efficiency made everyone’s day a bit brighter. Heaven knows it was not just the humans who anticipated his arrival with gladness—all manner of family pets were happy to see or hear the arrival of the big brown truck. Horses and goats got a friendly welcome, but it is the dogs who will miss him the most. Receiving not just a biscuit, they got head scratches and back rubs and as much attention as their human counterparts.

Got a downed tree branch? Haack comes back later with his chain saw. Package really heavy? He brings it inside. Mail or newspaper out in the box? He brings it up along with your package. These are the kinds of things that have so many residents very sad to see him retire, but all wish him many years of contentment in Eastern Tennessee. Relaxing doesn’t come easy to this guy, but hopefully he will enjoy many peaceful hours with his wife Tammy and teaching his grandson how to fish on the lake behind their new home.
