At its March 16 meeting, the Granby Board of Selectmen paid tribute to Sergeant Doreen Mikan, who recently retired after her 33-year career with the Granby Police Department.

Her tenure was marked by extraordinary heroism. Her quick thinking, skill and courage in the face of emergencies resulted in her receiving four lifesaving awards. As a member of the Regional Dive Team for many years, she often undertook dangerous missions to provide specialized recovery and safety services to not only Granby, but also to surrounding towns.

Mikan made a commitment to the welfare of Granby’s youth through her leadership in the D.A.R.E. program that teaches drug use prevention to its vulnerable residents as a Victim Advocate. She led complex and sensitive investigations, providing support and a path to justice for these people.

On a lighter note, Mikan always enjoyed representing the police department on horseback in the town’s Memorial Day parade.

Throughout her career, she earned the deep respect of the residents of Granby. From them, she received many letters of gratitude for her outstanding service, which was always done with great kindness.

At the March 16 meeting, First Selectman Mark Fiorentino presented Mikan with a proclamation that reads, “The Town of Granby hereby recognizes and honors Sergeant Doreen Mikan for her enduring dedication to public safety, her tireless service and the lasting impact she has had in fostering a safe, peaceful, caring community. The citizens of Granby extend their wishes for a fulfilling and well-earned retirement, with heartfelt gratitude for her exemplary service and lasting contributions to the Granby Police Department.”
