Winter weather reminders

With the winter season in full effect, the town’s building official and fire marshal remind the public about home maintenance for heating systems. As the weather fluctuates through its regular cycle of cold weather to below- freezing temperatures, the equipment that heats our homes must work harder and longer. Make sure to maintain proper clearances for all equipment, whether it be a boiler, furnace, pellet stove, wood stove, etc. Pellet and wood burning stoves should be cleaned regularly, with ashes disposed of in a proper manner.

Many fires are caused by improper use and care of these alternative heating devices. Follow manufacturer’s instructions when using heat tape. Some brands do not require insulation over the pipes, while others require heat tape be installed only over pipes with water in them. Many heat tapes and gutter melts should not cross wires because safety mechanisms such as breakers and fuses may activate.

Around livestock, care should be taken with proper placement and use of heat lamps and heated water buckets. Directions for the unit(s) should be followed to prevent improper contact. Some require a certain amount of water to absorb heat. Neglecting to follow safety and fire prevention measures may result in catastrophic incidents—so please always follow the directions.
