Honoring Granby’s living history: America250 yard signs for pre-1776 homes

As Granby prepares to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the Granby America250 Committee is proud to announce a special initiative that brings history right to our front yards.

Thanks to the generous support of the Salmon Brook Historical Society (SBHS), a complimentary commemorative yard sign will be offered to every Granby home that was standing at the time of the American Revolution. These signs are a visible way to honor the families, craftsmanship and stories that helped shape Granby at the very beginning of our nation.

The yard sign will read: “This Home Was Here in 1776—250 Years of Freedom!”

Bringing history home

SBHS Archivist Sarah Langdon has carefully researched town records and prepared a list of homes that appear to have been built before 1776. These historic residences are living witnesses to Granby’s earliest days and to the ideals of liberty that gave rise to the United States.

By placing these signs throughout town, residents and visitors alike will be reminded that Granby’s history is not confined to books or museums—it is woven into the homes we pass every day.

The society fully funds this initiative and is part of Granby’s broader America250 commemoration, celebrating 250 years of American independence in 2026. The signs will be provided at no cost to qualifying homeowners who are encouraged to participate whether their property has been in their family for generations or they are newer stewards of a historic home. Each sign recognizes the house itself and its enduring place in Granby’s story.
