Monday Movie Matinee, The Monuments Men: Monday, Nov. 8; 1:30–3:30 p.m.
This month’s film is a captivating World War II drama directed by George Clooney and starring Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville and Cate Blanchett. Based on a true story, the film follows a group of art historians and museum curators who risk their lives to recover priceless works of art stolen by the Nazis. Complimentary snacks are provided. Stitch-Ins I and II: Two dates to choose from: Wednesday, Nov. 5 or Saturday, Nov. 15, from 10:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. For adults and teens. Tapping Into the Past: Tavern Life in Early Connecticut: Thursday, Nov. 13, 6:30–7:30 p.m.
Taverns in early Connecticut were more than just a place to drink. Travelers and locals alike saw taverns as a place to be entertained, spread news and gossip, have a good meal and get a night’s lodging. History of Myrtle Mills Factory Store: Saturday, Nov. 15, 1–2 p.m. Take a journey down memory lane when we visit one of the first factory stores in Connecticut. Historian Timothy LeBouthillier shares the story of Myrtle Mills Factory Store, a knitting mill that helped shape Unionville’s and the Farmington Valley’s history and left an indelible mark on the American retail landscape. Learn about the store’s early beginnings and wartime contributions as well as post-war retail innovations. Attendees will have an opportunity to share memories. Register to attend. Conservation Conversation: Wildlife Diversity of the McLean Game Refuge: Tuesday, Nov. 18, 6:30–7:30 p.m. The McLean Game Refuge assembles a broad mixture of geologies, land types and waterways into one of southern New England’s most diverse places. A remarkable diversity of plants and animals can be found on the 4,400-acre tract located in Granby, Simsbury and Canton. Forest Ecologist Connor Hogan shares conservation information, including habitat protection, species monitoring and more. Register to attend. Makerspace Equipment Training: Adults, Teens 16+, youth ages 10 and up with an adult.
Visit the library’s makerspace and learn to use the 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing and embroidery machines, sublimation printer, vinyl cutter, mug and bottle presses and all manner of digitizing equipment. Registration required. See website for details.
3D Printing: Tuesday, Nov. 25, 4:30–5:30 p.m. Learn how to find 3D print files and then use Bambu Labs 3D Printers to print them!
Digitizing: Thursday, Nov. 13, 1:30–2:30 p.m. Learn how to digitize analog media such as 8mm slides, VHS tapes, and records!
Custom Designing: Thursday, Nov. 6 or 20, 4–5:30 p.m., choose either date. Learn how to use the Cricut cutting devices, heat transfer presses and the Brother Sublimation printer to create personalized designs for stick-ons, iron-ons, and papers!
Laser Cutting: Tuesday, Nov. 4 or 18, 4:30–5:30 p.m., choose either date. Learn how to use the Glowforge Pro laser engraving machine to engrave, score and cut a variety of materials including wood, acrylic and leather!

Something About the Author: Monday, Nov. 3, 1:30–2:30 p.m. Discussing American writer and journalist Candice Millard, a bestselling historian whose meticulously researched books unearth some of U.S. history’s greatest moments and figures including Theodore Roosevelt, James Garfield and Winston Churchill. Millard is also a former editor and contributing writer for National Geographic. Leading the discussion is John Rusnock. Registration is requested.
Millennials Read Book-ish Club: Wednesday, Nov. 5, 6:30-7:30 p.m. At this no-stress book discussion, join readers in their 20s, 30s, and 40s to talk about current book picks. You do not need to be reading anything to participate. A partnership between Bloomfield, Granby, and Simsbury libraries and open to all. Participants will be responsible for their own food and drink purchases. We hope to see you there! Millennials Read will meet this month at Dudleytown in Windsor.
Sci-Fi Fantasy Book Club: Wednesday, Nov. 19, 6–7 p.m. Discussing Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson. Tress lives a simple life on an island in an emerald-green ocean. She collects cups from sailors and listens to stories told by her friend Charlie. When Charlie’s father takes him on a voyage to find a bride, disaster strikes. Tress must now seek the Sorceress of the deadly Midnight Sea. But can Tress leave her simple life and sail on a sea where a single drop of water can mean instant death? Leading the discussion is Jim Gorman.
