Support your local farms at the Holiday Market

Come see us at the outdoor Lost Acres Vineyard Holiday Market on April 14, from 4 – 7 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to liven up your holiday meals and show your support for the farms that dot our landscape, and the hard-working farmers who run those farms. It’s also your last chance to get Holcomb Farm roots and greens before the new season begins. A range of other local farms will be there with us, offering all kinds of breads, cheeses, wines, baked goods, port, beef, lamb, and more for your spring celebrations. Don’t miss out!

Kate Emery art show to benefit Fresh Access

Lost Acres Vineyard will feature an exhibition of oil paintings by Kate Emery from April 29 through May 30 and Emery, who has supported the Farm before through her generosity, will donate 50 percent of proceeds to the Friends of Holcomb Farm’s Fresh Access program. Here is a brief description of the show, titled The Land That Feeds Us: Body, Mind and Soul:

As climate change-fueled drought, wildfires, storms and other environmental challenges threaten the land that nourishes us, this exhibition of original oil paintings by Farmington Valley artist Kate Emery invites you to pause and to consider the myriad ways nature sustains our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Her creations are a reminder of the beauty and importance of both cultivated and wild lands and of all creatures that inhabit them. Bring home art from this show, and you’ll nurture your own spirit while also feeding those in need.

Giving back is part of Emery’s mission as an artist. She says, “All of my art has a greater mission: to uplift nonprofit organization working for the betterment of people and our planet.”

The Friends of Holcomb Farm is truly grateful to Emery for her generous support, and to Lost Acres Vineyard for hosting this special exhibition. Lost Acres Vineyard spring hours are Fridays and Saturdays from 12 – 6 p.m. and Sundays from 12 – 5 p.m. We hope to see you there.

Celebrate Mom: Plant Sale May 6 and 7

Our annual Plant and Seedling Sale is so popular that we’ve decided to host two of them this year. The first will be on Mother’s Day weekend and feature mainly hardy veggie plants, herbs and flowers. Give your mom a lasting gift that will make her smile all summer long. This sale will be held May 6 and May 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at our Farm Store, 111 Simsbury Road in West Granby. Shop local, make Mom happy, be a hero—all with a quick stop at Holcomb Farm.

Get Ready for Summer: Plant Sale Part 2 on May 20 and 21

Part 2 of our annual Plant and Seedling Sale will take place on May 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here, in addition to some of the veggies, flowers, and herbs we’ll be selling earlier in the month, we will introduce some summer-lovin’ big boys like melons, tomatoes, eggplant, cucumbers, zucchini, and basil. Whether you’re planning to plant a full veggie garden or a few pots of herbs on the patio, Holcomb Farm is where you’ll want to start. Come see us on May 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., at our Farm Store.

Sunday Brunch: June 26

Plans are well underway for a family-friendly summer celebration, a Farm Brunch, on June 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the North Barn at Holcomb Farm. This will be a fundraiser for our Fresh Access program, through which we provide healthy, farm-fresh produce to food-insecure people in Granby and the Greater Hartford area. The past two years we were unable to host our annual Harvest Dinner fundraiser, and we are excited to gather with our farm family again. We will welcome guests from our partner agencies, who can speak to the impact Fresh Access has among those in need. Entertainment will be provided by Hartford-based singer/songwriter Brandon Serrafino. Mark your calendars and check our website for more details! Bring the whole family for this fun day out in support of a good cause.

Farm Store opens June 14!

June 14 marks the Opening Day of our Farm Store. Even if you missed your chance to purchase a Summer Share (yes, we sold out early again!), you can enjoy Holcomb Farm’s bounty a la carte, by shopping at our Farm Store. In addition to our own produce, we stock items from other area farms, including honey, eggs, beef, chicken, maple syrup, soaps, and more. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. We will be open from June 14 through Oct. 29. We look forward to seeing you there!

University of St. Joseph students to create documentary on Fresh Access

Students and faculty in the digital media program at the University of St. Joseph in West Hartford are creating a documentary film about Holcomb Farm’s Fresh Access program. They are interviewing people who have been involved in the growth of the Fresh Access program since its inception, including First Selectman and former Friends of Holcomb Farm Vice President Mark Fiorentino, Farm Manager Joe O’Grady, and representatives from our partner institutions. We can’t wait to see it.

Tree Trail and hiking updates

The work at the Tree Trail may have slowed down a bit for winter, but the volunteers are still busy making plans for spring projects. One of these projects is a multi-year effort to produce educational panels for the back of the trail kiosk. These panels will offer information on a variety of topics including botany, birds and seasonal flowers found on the farm trails. The Holcomb Tree Trail would like to thank the Granby Education Foundation for providing grant money to print these weatherproof panels. Look for them this spring.

This is just a brief update: lots more is happening, all designed to make sure that this historic property serves the Granby community. Anyone with questions about the Friends Organization, or the Farm itself, is invited to reach out through our website, or by email to info@holcombfarm.org If you’d like to receive emails from us, please sign up on website (click on the “Welcome” tab to submit your info) or contact cathy@holcombfarm.org and ask her to add your name to our list!
