Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou once said: “A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer; it sings because it has a song”. Like a bird who never clipped its wings, Angelou soared above the clouds to become a rainbow in many people’s lives. Through her poems and speeches, she uplifted an entire generation and her legacy continues on.

As a poet, author and civil rights activist, Angelou went through a journey in which she had to overcome tremendous adversity. At the age of eight, she thought her voice had killed her mother’s boyfriend, so she stopped speaking until she was 13 years old. In addition, while growing up in Stamps, Arkansas, Angelou faced racism. As a result, she thought that being black made her “dirty or unclean”. This led her to fight for racial equality. She became friends with Malcolm X, aided Martin Luther King Jr. in starting the Poor People’s March, and wrote about prejudice in her poetry.

Angelou achieved a lot in life and was an inspiration to people like Oprah, Rihanna and Beyoncé. Everyone can learn how to create change from the woman who never tried to be normal, and showcased how amazing she was.

Like a bird whose wings were never clipped,

Birds can’t clip their own wings…..
