A couple of months ago, Farmer O’Grady talked about all the work that has to be done in the winter months on a big farm such as Holcomb Farm in West Granby. These photos capture the Farm on a single day, Feb. 21, which happened to be a 50+ degree day, so the crew could work without the usual layers of cold weather protection typical for mid-winter.
Farmer Joe returned to the barn from checking out the property on the big tractor. “Way too muddy out there,” he proclaimed! The spinach tastes as wonderful as it looks. Emma’s chickens couldn’t believe their fortune to be able to spend the afternoon sunning in their yard. They were talking up a storm, with no social distancing. Hot peppers hung for drying maintained a little holiday spirit in the barn. The parking lot will soon be cleared of the many piles of wood chips donated by the Asplundh arborists when they cleared power lines during the winter. The material will be used to mulch present and future perennials all over the Farm. Bags of winter veggies being prepared for sale. The biggest job of the day was replacing the plastic covering of one of the hot houses. David Spatcher and Justin Avery did a fabulous job. Raising the side for ventilation worked perfectly. From l., David Spatcher, Michelle Dingivan, Hanna Malzenski and Melody Smith harvested spinach to be washed and weighed for packaging.
