Funding for alternative protein research

I was happy to learn the chair of the House Appropriations Committee, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, supports equal funding for alternative protein research. “The United States can continue to be a global leader on alternative protein science, and these technologies can play an important role in combatting climate change and adding resiliency to our food system,” she said in a recent agricultural hearing.

I assume DeLauro includes cultured meat in the category of alternative protein. For those who don’t know, cultured meat is grown from cells, without slaughter. It offers clear benefits to the environment, public health and animal welfare over conventional meat. All legislators should support increased funding for alternative protein research. I’m thankful for DeLauro’s leadership on this issue.
