Local birders find a treasure

On Jan. 16, Granby residents John Weeks and his wife, Christine Chinni, were birding along the Hockanum River behind the East Hartford Middle School when they spotted this magnificent bald eagle perched in a tree. Weeks says, “Judging by plumage and bill color, I reckon the bird is about three years old.” Chinni adds, “Note the white feathers just starting to fill in on its head.” Bald eagles take four to five years to reach maturity and acquiring the dark body and stark white head so familiar as our national emblem.

Weeks took the photo with his iPhone and a Swarovski telescope.
