Granby Parents for a Safe Graduation has announced the winners of its 2020 art competition. The first place entry will be used in the invitation design and for free tee shirts for all students attending Granby Memorial High School’s free graduation party. The party is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 at the Farmington Valley YMCA.

This year’s first place winner is Natalia Vicencio. The second place winner is John Hitchiner, and the third place winner is Arin Mikalonis. The winners receive prizes of $125, $75 and $50, respectively. Granby Parents for a Safe Graduation sincerely thanks art teacher Hollie Hecht for helping to promote the contest every year.

Safe Grad Night is a free, fun-filled, substance-free “all night” event offered to GMHS graduates on the night of graduation. The event features games, activities, contests and prizes, as well as food and drinks. Graduating seniors may participate in all activities at no cost to them.

The GMHS Safe Grad Committee is asking parents of underclassmen GMHS students to volunteer for the event, so that parents of seniors can enjoy graduation festivities with their families. For this reason, it is especially important for new volunteers to step up each year. Help is needed with room set up, chaperoning and assisting with various activities. There are also several tasks required in advance of the event, if a parent is able to lend a hand but isn’t available for the party itself.

The committee is planning upcoming fundraisers to support the event. One way to support Safe Grad is by surprising friends with a flock of pink flamingos roosting on their lawn for 48 hours. After their visit ends, the flamingos mysteriously migrate to roost at another address. Anyone interested in flocking a friend for $25 can contact Sara Scotto at scottofamily@cox.net
