Food drive to benefit local Food Shares

As Thanksgiving approaches, consider helping those in need through the Jack Bannan’s Memorial Turkey Trot on Wednesday. Nov. 20, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Bannan was a World War II veteran and retired educator with the Simsbury public school who single-handedly started this turkey drive in 1992. A group of volunteers now sponsors this frozen turkey drive for Thanksgiving, with Jack’s daughter, Marianne, who coordinates the effort. Food Share distributes the turkeys and canned food to local families in need.

An 18-wheel refrigerated truck will be parked at the main parking lot (near the soccer field) at Henry James Middle School, 155 Firetown Rd, Simsbury. You can deliver your turkey there, or purchase at one of the following stores and delivery will be arranged: Miller Foods and Big Y in Avon, Fitzgerald’s, Stop & Shop and Kane’s supermarkets in Simsbury, Geissler’s and Stop & Shop in Granby, Geissler’s in Bloomfield, and Shop Rite in Canton.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Marianne Bannan (860-668-5352) or Bob Gauthier (860-658-2071).
