Game dinner at the American Legion filled the hall.

On January 27, the Shannon-Shattuck Post 182 of the American Legion hosted approximately one hundred people for its annual Game Dinner at its post in Granby. The purpose of the yearly game dinner is to raise money for the Post’s annual scholarship fund awarded each year to a Granby High School senior. A small percentage of the money also goes toward helping some local widows of WWII veterans who need a little assistance.

The kitchen was once again commanded by Chef Gill Justo whose experience as an Army cook served him well. Wayne Adams, Warren Markey, Peter DelNegro, Wayne Hoffman, Wayne Cahoon, Robin Bennett and other Post members assisted him. This is the 23rd year in a row that Gill has commanded the cooking duties. Fare started with homemade rolls and salad, venison stuffed mushrooms, venison sausage and venison meatballs. Next came the venison chili, roasted venison, teriyaki rabbit, wine-marinated rabbit, baked salmon, teriyaki pheasant, honey mustard pheasant, roasted potatoes, rice, and even a few vegetables and cookies for dessert. All reports were that the food was excellent again this year.

Special thanks to the local businesses that contributed gifts for the door prizes. These prizes included a $25 gift certificate from Stop and Shop, a $25 gift certificate from Geissler’s Supermarket, a $25 gift certificate from Wayback Burgers, a $25 gift certificate from Flowers-n-Such, two gift baskets with coffee and travel mugs from Starbucks, two bottles of wine from Liquor World of Granby, two $25 gift certificates from Han Asian Cuisine, a $50 gift certificate from Route 10 Tire and $85 worth of car washes from Granby Auto Wash. Next year it’s hoped there will be even more prizes to give out.

The American Legion Post 182 located at 244 North Granby Road (route 189) is open to all honorably discharged veterans of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves. Active members meet twice a month at the Post and discuss new and old business, plan local events such as the annual game dinner, the pancake breakfast, Memorial Day parade, Veteran’s Day parade, raising money to maintain the Post building, and keep up with each other. If you are a local veteran and would like to consider joining the American Legion, please come out to the Post at 7:30 p.m. on the second or fourth Friday of each month to meet some of the members and sit in on a meeting. If you are a local veteran and don’t have the time to join, please consider donating some tax-deductible financial support to the Post. The money stays local and goes to great causes. Contact Jim Hall at 860-653-3819 or send a check payable to the American Legion Post 182, P.O. Box 182, Granby CT 06035.

The American Legion Post 182 would like to thank the people who came to the Game Dinner and help support the community. Next on the calendar is the annual Pancake Breakfast on April 14. Serving starts bright and early at 6 a.m. until noon. Come on out and have some pancakes covered in pure Vermont maple syrup with a side of sausage, coffee and orange juice. Once again proceeds will benefit the annual scholarship fund.
