Don’t Miss Dave Gunning and Noah Miller at South Church
By Carole Bernard
As a Canadian import, Dave Gunning tops the list. With a list of awards and recognition too long to repeat, he is as varied and impressive as he is extensive. With 11 albums and 20 years of performance experience under his belt, Dave has gathered a passionate following in Canada and the United States. After receiving a warm welcome in Australia, Dave has planted the seeds for another branch of his fan-club with the people “down under”.
Lost Tracks, Dave’s debut album, dropped in 1996. In 1998, Dave was recognized as a talent in the musical field with his first nominations by Music Nova Scotia in 2002 as producer of the year, engineer of the year and studio of the year. He followed that up in 2003 with the Music Nova Scotia Award for musician of the year, and the awards and accolades continue every year.
Dave writes from the heart, with an organic and unadorned yet powerful style of writing and performing. His 2014 East Coast Music Award (Canadian organization) song of the year, These Hands, will grab you unaware with its raw beauty and emotion.
Writing about subjects as diverse as hockey and Alberta oil sand workers, Dave spins his magical songs with an intense but gentle grip on your heart. You will not want to miss this show.
In keeping with its tradition of encouraging and showcasing local student performers, South Church is pleased to present Noah Miller, who will open for Dave Gunning. Noah is a Granby Memorial High School senior, with a history of performing that goes back to the 5th grade. Playing the acoustic, electric guitar and bass, as well as singing and songwriting, Noah plans to pursue a career in music production after graduation in June 2017. He plans to attend a college with a music program.
With no real interest in music, Noah found some cassette tapes from the 60s and 70s that belong to his parents, and he became hooked. Starting out as a solo performer, Noah was influenced by such rock and roll legends as Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Doors. After cutting his teeth on acting, Noah gained the confidence and experience to perform with his band, The Variations, that is known to be high-energy and highly entertaining. The four-man group, performing everything from rock to mellow songs, has done many shows in the area including performances at Granby Memorial High School. Noah plans to perform some original music at the concert.
