When Granby football went 0-10 in its first-ever varsity season in 2010, it looked as though it was going to be a long time before Granby would be competitive on Friday nights. However, the Bears had different ideas. Every season since that winless first year, Granby has won more games than it did the previous season. The Bears had two wins in 2011, four in 2012, six in 2013, seven in 2014, and thus far nine in 2015.
As it stands right now, Granby football is 9–0 and has locked up numerous impressive accolades already this fall. After beating Nonnewaug 21–7 on November 6, the Bears won their first ever Pequot West Division championship. That was impressive, but the team wasn’t done yet. The following weekend, Coginchaug forfeited its game vs. Granby due to its coaching staff having to resign because of a “toxic environment” complaint from parents and players in the organization. Nonetheless, Granby was victorious and got to 9–0 on the season. That meant that the Bears were the outright Pequot Conference Champions, having the best record of any team in the three Pequot divisions. If that wasn’t enough, the Bears also clinched their first ever trip to the Class S playoffs.
When asked about what this season meant to the team’s senior all-conference center, Andrew Migliaccio, he responded, “This season has been great. To grow up with some of your best friends playing football together and to have this season come together like this has been a dream to say the least.” However, Migliaccio was quick to mention that there was still work to be done. “Playoffs are about to start and my hopes for this team is to go all the way. I wouldn’t want to end this year any other way.”
Echoing Migliaccio’s statements, this season has been unlike anything Granby football has ever seen. Between championships, playoffs, and the chance at an undefeated regular season, the Bears are pleased with what they have accomplished, but aren’t satisfied yet. There is still a job to be done, and that is to go chase a Class S state championship when the Bears’ playoff run starts in December.
It should be noted that, baring a loss to Canton, the Bears would host a playoff game on Tuesday night December 1, in Granby.)
