Ten Granby area residents will perform in the Farmington Valley Chorale’s annual holiday concert on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 3 p.m. and Friday, Dec. 11 at 8 p.m., at First Church of Christ, 689 Hopmeadow St. (Route 10), Simsbury. The Chorale will present four settings of the Magnificat, or Cancticle of Mary, by Vivaldi, Mozart, Rutter and Stanford, along with traditional songs of the season.
According to the chorale’s artist director, Ellen Gilson Voth, numerous composers over the centuries have chosen the text of the Magnificat for their works, showing how timeless and inspirational this text is.
Granby area residents performing include: Peter Barwick, Carol Bressor, Judith Burhans, Carolyn and John Flint, Linda Harrold, Helen Hogan, Elaine Lydon, Debbie Siegel and Kenneth Way.
Featured soloists will be Louise Fauteux, soprano; Dana Kephart, mezzo-soprano; Marc Winer, tenor; and Anthony Leathem, bass-baritone. Organist Frank Zilinyi will accompany the chorale.
Dr. Voth, music educator and composer, has been artistic director of the chorale since 2007. Her opera, Owl Moon, based on a book by Jane Yolen, was recently premiered by the Hartford Opera Theater as part of its New in November festival.
