As fall brings cooler weather, apple pies and pumpkin lattes, it also brings along the packed schedule of the school year. Although the increase in activity is welcome, it can also leave us feeling overwhelmed, stressed out and running low on patience. Perhaps this fall is the time to equip yourself with a few new parenting tools to help you get through another busy year.
South Church is offering a five week compassionate parenting course led by Heather Legace, Licensed Professional Counselor. Compassionate parenting is possible when we use language that builds relationships and when we begin to understand what our children are growing through. This course will cover all ages and stages of development from infancy to adult children. Other topics covered will be: providing the nurture and structure children need, guiding children with principles vs. rules, understanding what your children are growing through, speaking the language of compassion: virtues, and honoring the spirit of a child. The class will meet in the South Church Youth Building for five weeks on Thursday evenings from 6-7:30 p.m., beginning Sep. 24. The cost is $50 and scholarships are available.
The Sunday school teachers at South Church recently went through training with Heather on speaking the language of compassion: virtues. As a teaching team they hope to create an environment where every child feels welcome and safe and where each child is given the opportunity to live into their “strength” and “growth” virtues: compassion, kindness, generosity, joyfulness and justice- to name a few. The children’s ministry at South Church serves children PreK-6th grade during the 10:30 a.m. service.
