Incy S. Muir, Executive Director of the Farmington Valley Visiting Nurse Association, was among the 100 nursing professionals recognized at the 13th Annual Hartford Regional Nightingale Awards for Excellence in Nursing Gala. The annual event, hosted by Hartford HealthCare at Home, was held on May 7 at the Connecticut Convention Center.

Ms. Muir has worked in nonprofit VNAs in Connecticut and Massachusetts since 1981, and has served as the Farmington Valley VNA’s Executive Director since 1989. Throughout her extensive tenure as Executive Director, she has provided strong leadership and stable direction while facing many challenges and changes in the health care environment. With sound business management, fiscal oversight and quality-focused clinical management that Muir has helped the Farmington Valley VNA remain an independent visiting nurse association which is not owned or operated by a hospital or other health care system. For the third consecutive year, the agency has been named a HomeCare Elite home health agency, ranking in the top 25th percentile in the United States based upon patient care outcomes, performance improvement, client experience and financial performance.  Muir holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in health care administration, and is also board-certified as a Nurse Executive, Advanced by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Dr. Peter Barwick, who serves on the Farmington Valley VNA’s Board of Directors and who nominated Muir for this Nightingale Award, said of the event, “What stood out was not the very careful planning, but the candidates themselves. Like Muir, many have dedicated their careers and lives to providing care and compassion to the sick and neediest in our communities. Working under the constant threat of underfunding, they remain steadfastly devoted to their clients. It is this spirit that Muir epitomizes and for which she was given this award. This is the spirit of a great society.”

Congratulations to all of the nominees for their dedication to the nursing profession.
