Granby Artists Association to host Hands-On Art Fun Day

By Robin Sidwell

On Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., family members—young and old—are invited to try their hands at a variety of art forms with members of the Granby Artists Association. Members will demonstrate their talent and techniques, and guide participants to work with spin art, watercolor, painting a Mother’s Day bouquet, casting a fishy creation, composing good photographs, adding to a wall sized mural, mixing acrylics on canvas, blasting paint with air, making giant bubbles and getting crafty at the kids’ table.

At the last event, over 300 children, teens, parents and grandparents alike all jumped into the activities and left with their own treasures created that day. Participants rotated from art station to art station, returning to their favorites throughout the day. It was clear that family members were in no hurry to go and one youngster even told his mom that he “never wants to leave.”

GAA artist Bill Scheel said, “There is something special when a child at first timidly blasts at the canvas, but then unexpectedly sees something never seen before. The eyes twinkle. There is a huge thirst to do it again. The child finishes, and says an unrehearsed, ‘Cool.’ And, I’m pretty sure it is so.”

The event is held, rain or shine, at Holcomb Farm, 113 Simsbury Road in West Granby, and is free. Healthy lunch and snacks will be available for purchase from the Waste Not Want Not Community Kitchen. For more information, contact Robin Sidwell at

The Granby Artists Association sponsors this event to promote arts in the community. It is their hope that a taste of working in various art forms will plant seeds for a lifetime of loving art. Come join the fun!
