Loosing Your Mind?

Are you losing your mind?

Chances are you know someone suffering from memory loss or a type of dementia. The numbers are staggering. Five million people in the United States are living with Alzheimer’s, every 67 seconds someone in the U.S. develops Alzheimer’s and in 2013, 15.5 million caregivers provided an estimated 17.7 billion hours of unpaid care (source: alz.org). Providing care for a person with any form of dementia is an exhausting emotional and physical burden. The stress levels are very high and more than one-third of caregivers report symptoms of depression. But—there is help.

Memory care specialists from Arden Courts of Avon, in partnership with the Granby Senior Center, are offering an Alzheimer’s support group. Learning to cope with the changes in your loved one’s behavior, changes in your relationship with them, and understanding how to handle it all is sometimes best explained by those who are dealing with a similar situation. Caregivers meet together to relate their stories, share experiences and gain insight and guidance from an expert in the field. Recognizing that taking time away from a loved one with memory loss is difficult, if not impossible, staff from Arden Courts is available to spend time with your loved one at the Senior Center while you are meeting.

The Alzheimer’s Support Group meets on the second Thursday of the month at 3 p.m. at the Granby Senior Center. The program is free.
