MeadowBrook hosts Norman Rockwell exhibit

By Debra Mullins

In the 1950s and 1960s, the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company of Springfield commissioned illustrator Norman Rockwell to create scenes depicting aspects of American family life for its national advertising campaign. These beautiful images appeared in such leading publications as the Saturday Evening Post, Time and Newsweek along with text that inspired readers to consider purchasing life insurance. Many of Rockwell’s Stockbridge neighbors, and Norman Rockwell himself, appear as models in this series. Numbering 81 in all, they constitute one of the largest groups of images created by the artist for any single commission.

The nearly complete 80 images that comprise this exhibition are not original drawings, but are assembled reproductions that highlight Rockwell’s images of everyday occurrences in American family life.

The exhibit at MeadowBrook is free and open to the public. Please stop in to tour the exhibit any time between now and Jan. 4. The exhibit will be on display Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
