During the public session discussion of the proposed Long-term Conservation and Sustainability Plan for Holcomb Farm on Oct. 17, some people presented personal memories and stories in their encouragement for approval of the plan. In June, the Friends hosted a special celebration in honor of our Fresh Access program. A family-friendly event at the farm, with Sunday Brunch catered by Clark Farms, drew a sold-out 125+ people to enjoy the iconic setting.

Ash tree removal at Holcomb Farm

Three days in mid-August saw a big change to the landscape at Holcomb Farm. Thanks to the public-spirited generosity of Eversource, a long line of dead white ash trees growing in a hedgerow between the southeast and southwest fields was cut, chipped and trucked away to be used by the Friends of Holcomb Farm’s CSA.

Kate Emery’s art show to benefit Holcomb Farm

The Land That Feeds Us: Body, Mind and Soul is the theme of an exhibition of oil paintings by Farmington-based artist Kate Emery that will be on view at Lost Acres Vineyard in North Granby from April 29 through May 30.

Feb. 21: A busy off-season day at Holcomb Farm

A couple of months ago, Farmer O’Grady talked about all the work that has to be done in the winter months on a big farm such as Holcomb Farm in West Granby. These photos capture the Farm on a single day, Feb. 21, which happened to be a 50+ degree day, so the crew could work without the usual layers of cold weather protection typical for mid-winter.

As I write this, the thermometer is having trouble reaching 20 after dipping close to zero last night. The ice throughout the woods and trails makes hikes without micro-spikes downright dangerous. But, spring springs eternal! By the time you read this, a drive around Granby will reveal the buckets hung and sap tanks filling, and maybe steam rising from a sugar house or two.
