Several years ago, and for my entire life before that, I thought of food as something to satisfy hunger. Sometimes I thought of it as entertainment; think: a meal on an airplane, popcorn at the movie theater.
The growing season is here! It always sounds fun to join the club of “Local Foodies”, but there’s work to be done, kids’ activities, let’s face it, LIFE.
Besides the horses, laying hens were our first foray into livestock. They are for lots of people.
For most of the year on the farm, our family is able to do all of the work by ourselves. We feed animals, start and clean-up gardens, fix fences and build sheds for 12 months a year.
Pigs are incredibly prolific. Mamma Pigs come into heat at all times of the year (unlike goat or sheep that are bred seasonally) and, since she gives birth in under four months (three months, three weeks and three days), she can be bred twice a year.
“I’m just an animal lover so I could never do that,” the lady at the library told me. In fact, she’s not the only one who has said this to me when the conversation about my line of work inevitably turns to the death of animals.
