For this Drummer segment, let’s talk about the Granby Police Department (GPD). In October 2023, Police Chief Scott Sansom was hired to lead the GPD. Before his arrival and especially today, the GPD is well run, and while calls for service are up, crime year-over-year is down.
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting to the Town of Granby for its annual comprehensive financial report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2024. This is the 19th consecutive year that Granby has been so recognized by the GFOA.
As I write this column, it’s the morning after Granby voters approved the FY26 budget.
A direct budget vote on the operation of our town is democracy in action and an important act in the self-governance of our community. Of the more than 8,500 registered voters in Granby, 1,126 exercised their voting privilege.
If it’s April, then the FY 26 budget vote is right around the corner. That vote will occur on Monday, April 21. You can vote in town hall during the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Absentee ballots are also available from the town clerk. Securing an absentee ballot is a process, so I encourage anyone who needs one to call the town clerk at 860-844-5310.
As the calendar turns to March and I mark one year on the job, let me thank the Granby community for allowing me the opportunity to be your Town Manager.
Jan. 1 marks the halfway point in the FY25 budget. It’s time to look back at our projections and look forward to the end of the budget year. It is also time to present the Plus One FY26 Budget Forecast to project into the following year.
By the time you read this, Thanksgiving Day will be in the rear-view mirror as we enter December, the holiday season, with the new year upon us in the blink of an eye!
On an annual basis, shortly after the budget is approved, each department head prepares a work plan of departmental initiatives they plan to tackle with the funds put into place by the approved annual budget.
In October, the Granby Board of Selectmen adopted several budget goals and objectives for the fiscal year 2025 budget and beyond.
