Each year the American Legion Post 182, Granby awards scholarships to deserving graduating seniors of Granby Memorial High School.
The Legion usually ask the graduating class to write a response to a topic in American History. The legion evaluates the responses, and scholarship winners are named at the Awards Ceremony each June.
Because this year we are celebrating our country’s 250th Anniversary, a unique opportunity presented itself to have the students evaluate some of the precepts inherent in the Declaration of Independence and reflect on them in their own lives.
At the end of that document, the signers promise to one another “our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.” This pledge reflects a deep commitment to shared responsibility and each other, standing together for something greater than oneself. We asked the graduates to describe a time when they made a commitment to others—family, school, team or community—and explain how that experience shaped their sense of responsibility, integrity or citizenship.
The winning essays we received from Logan Deardorff and Camden Bouley each earned a $2,500 scholarship and are presented as submitted to the American Legion later in this month’s issue.
