For 81 years, the Salmon Brook Historical Society has been preserving and celebrating the rich history of Granby, while educating the public about the importance of protecting the town’s historic buildings, landmarks and cultural heritage for future generations. At its recent Annual Meeting, SBHS President Howard Berg announced an exciting initiative by the Board of Directors to preserve Granby’s historic character for future generations.
The new Community Historic Property Maintenance Grant Program is now open to owners of Granby properties that are at least 100 years old. As part of a two-year pilot, the society will award up to 10 grants annually, each valued at up to $10,000, to help preserve and maintain historic homes and buildings throughout the community.
Funded through a commitment of up to $200,000 approved by the SBHS Board of Directors, the program reflects a growing recognition that preserving Granby’s history extends beyond museums and public buildings—it includes the homes, barns and historic structures that define the town’s identity.
Applications are now available and must be submitted by July 1. Grant recipients will be announced by Sept. 1.
According to Berg, the program represents a major investment in the community’s future. “Granby’s historic homes and buildings tell the story of who we are as a town,” said Berg. “This grant program is an investment not only in preserving old structures, but in protecting the character, heritage and sense of place that make Granby special. We hope this initiative encourages and supports property owners who share that commitment to stewardship. We don’t want to invest just in our two campuses within Granby, but we want to use our resources to support preserving the historical character of our entire town.”
