As spring approaches, the Farmington Valley YMCA is gearing up for an exciting season of youth development, community wellness and meaningful impact. From the opening of day camp registration to record breaking fundraising events supporting cancer survivors, there is a great deal happening at our local Y.
This year’s “Battle Weekend” was a tremendous success. We had more than 50 dancers on the floor, each participant stepping up to strengthen the LiveSTRONG at the YMCA program. Bike for the Battle, with over 100 riders coming together to pedal for a purpose, helped raise the funds needed to support cancer survivors in our region. These events highlight the extraordinary generosity of our community and its commitment to helping neighbors reclaim health and hope after cancer.
LiveSTRONG at the YMCA is a free, evidence-based, 12-week program that helps adult cancer survivors regain strength, improve balance and mobility, reduce fatigue, and rebuild confidence following treatment. Developed in partnership with the LiveSTRONG Foundation, the program offers twiceweekly sessions led by instructors trained in cancer survivorship, post-rehabilitative exercise and supportive care. Research conducted jointly with Yale University and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute shows that participants experience significant improvements in physical activity, overall quality of life and reductions in cancer related fatigue. The sense of community and emotional support survivors gain by connecting with others on similar journeys is even more powerful than the physical results. Many participants say the program helps them “get their lives back.” Funds raised through Bike for the Battle and Dance for the Battle directly support this life changing program, ensuring that every survivor can participate at no cost.
Registration for YMCA Day Camp is officially underway, and families are encouraged to secure their spots early. YMCA Day Camps are nationally recognized for providing transformational experiences where children build confidence, make friends, stay active and explore new interests. Camps offer structured activities that promote physical health, social development, creativity and independence, all in a safe, supportive environment led by trained staff. According to the YMCA of the USA, day camps offer children opportunities to develop friendships, build resilience, gain leadership skills and enjoy hands-on learning experiences that foster both independence and teamwork. Locally, the Farmington Valley YMCA offers traditional and specialty camp programming designed to help all children thrive, with financial assistance available to ensure that every family can experience the joy of summer camp. Along with day camp excitement, the YMCA’s Spring Program Session begins registration on April 1. The season features a wide range of offerings for youth, teens, adults and seniors including swim lessons, youth sports, fitness programs, martial arts, archery, fencing and enrichment classes including Kindermusik. Spring is an ideal time to set new goals, try a new activity, or reconnect with the community. Programs fill quickly, so early registration is encouraged.
As the community gears up for a busy spring, another long-standing tradition is returning: the Granby Road Race. Registration is now open and runners, walkers, families and supporters are invited to take part in this celebrated local event. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for individuals or businesses looking to invest in a morning of fun, fitness and community spirit. For more information, visit ghymca.org/granbyroadrace
From summer adventures to survivor support, the Farmington Valley YMCA remains deeply committed to strengthening the foundations of our community, helping children grow, supporting health and wellness for all, and ensuring that no one faces life’s challenges alone.
