Ray’s open letter to Granby

To everyone in Granby, especially those I have had the pleasure to deliver to, it is with bittersweet emotions that I am announcing my retirement from UPS. I started driving for the company in 1988 and have been delivering in Granby for the past 24 years.

I have always said that I developed true friendships as opposed to just having customers in all my years delivering in Granby. I will truly miss the people and puppies (and all the other animals), but not the brown truck and all those packages! I have known some kids from the time they were born and have watched them grow up, some now having kids of their own.

I have enjoyed giving treats to, and playing with, the many dogs that I have encountered over the years. I have also shed quite a few tears when one of them journeys over the Rainbow Bridge. One of the best compliments I have received is, “You’re like the ice cream truck for dogs. They hear you coming and get all excited, knowing they might get a treat soon.”

My wife and I have lived in Granby for 24 years but, as some of you know, we are retiring to the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee. To quote John Muir, “The mountains are calling and I must go.”

If I may ask one favor of you all, please lead life with love and kindness. If you see me delivering around Granby in my remaining few weeks, please give me a honk or a wave.

Your friendly neighborhood UPS man,

Ray Haack
