Habitat Restoration Project: Benefiting local wildlife and supporting our local food system

This year, McLean Game Refuge is embarking on a habitat restoration project. Part of this project will involve clearing trees to encourage wildlife diversity in its meadows, an important part of the New England ecosystem. Wildlife diversity fosters ecosystem resilience by supporting pollinators, birds and small mammals, all while bolstering the soil health.

Trees harvested during this project will be milled on-site by Corey Ridel of East Hartland’s Ridel Portable Sawmill. Once dried, local East Hartland photographer and craftsman Taylor Kemp will use the wood to build vegetable display tables and other interior furnishings for the Holcomb Farm CSA and Farm Store at 87 Simsbury Road in West Granby.

Kemp is working closely with Holcomb Farm Store Manager Melody Smith to design pieces that are functional, durable and showcase our region’s natural resources. Thanks to McLean Game Refuge, Cory Ridel and Taylor Kemp for taking the time to make this project happen—what better way to display local agriculture than through local resources and community partnership?
