The Granby Memorial High School Robotics Team (Granby GRUNTS) celebrated the start of their FIRST Robotics competition season with “Kickoff” on Jan. 10. In the terms of FIRST Robotics, Kickoff refers to the annual live-streamed event that reveals the new challenge to all participating teams around the world.

In this year’s game, REBUILT, teams will design, build and program a robot to traverse obstacles while picking up and shooting balls on the playing field.

First Selectman Mark Fiorentino joined the team for the reveal video and asked team members how they would approach various aspects of the game and robot design. The team’s first district competition will be held on March 14–15 at Western New England University in Springfield and its second district competition will be held at Hartford Public High School on March 28–29. The events typically run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
