In her November 2024 article, Kim Pereira highlighted the career of Jayne Hyatt, a recent graduate of Granby Memorial High School who set a new volleyball record. Pereira’s article, GMHS volleyball player Jayne Hyatt achieves 1,000 “kills” was awarded second place in the Sports Specialty Articles category. In addition to highlighting Hyatt’s athletic achievements, including being recognized as a four-time All-State volleyball player and honored as the North Central Connecticut Conference Championship MVP, Pereira’s article provided a quick primer on different gameplay actions.

Although Pereira never played volleyball, she “learned a lot from speaking with Jayne.” In fact, one of her favorite things about writing for the Drummer, “is the opportunity to sit down with a range of different people and have a conversation with the intent of seeing life from their perspective.”

Pereira, who grew up in Western Massachusetts where the nearest grocery store was 40 minutes away, moved to Granby four years ago and enjoys the “mix of convenience and countryside” and appreciates the “multitude of great restaurants and stores and excellent access to nature” that Granby has to offer. She began writing for the Drummer in 2023, and since that time has covered a range of topics and “has been able to take diametrically different ways of viewing the world and apply them to [her] own life.”

Kim and her husband welcomed their first child recently and she is enjoying time at home with her baby, who is “still trying to learn that nighttime is for sleeping.” After her maternity leave, she’ll be returning to her position as a Product Engineer at Coherent Corp. Until then, she’ll be taking advantage of all that Granby has to offer.
