Adults

Discover Cedar Hill Cemetery: Thursday, Nov. 2, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Learn about the uniquely landscaped 270-acre Hartford site, its historic memorial artwork and monuments, and the many distinguished individuals from our nation’s past who chose this site as their final resting place. Sponsored by The Friends of the Granby Public Libraries.

Lifestyle Medicine, Heart Health: Thursday, Nov. 9, 6:30–7:30 p.m. Understand the different types of cardiovascular disease and find out how holistic therapeutic intervention is used to prevent, treat and often reverse its harmful effects. Kathleen Olchowski, RN, returns for the final program in the well-received Lifestyle Medicine series. Attendees receive helpful handouts and a healthy snack at the program as well as ample time for Q and A after the presentation.

Monday Movie Matinee, The Lost King: Monday, Nov. 13, 1:30–3:30 p.m. Join us for a screening of The Lost King, a 2022 British film based on the book The King’s Grave: The Search for Richard III written by Philippa Langley and Michael Jones. You’ll be delighted and intrigued with the biographical story of a British citizen who attended a meeting of the Richard III Society, embraced a bit of practical sleuthing, and ultimately helped to discover the intact remains of Richard III during an archeological dig in a random parking lot.

The Art of The Book: Thursday, Nov. 16, 5–6:30 p.m. Calligrapher Debby Reelitz guides adults and teens on a creative journey to make a unique book structure. We’re breaking the rules about what books should look like and be. All materials provided. Sponsored by The Friends of The Granby Public Libraries.

Passion For Papercraft, Fir Tree Quilling: Monday, Nov. 27, 1–2:30 p.m. Adult crafters are invited to create seasonally festive artwork to enjoy as holiday decoration or to gift in the form of a greeting card. All materials are provided to complete a paper-quilled fir tree. Appropriate for beginners and beyond. Sponsored by The Friends of the Granby Public Libraries.

Book Clubs

Books for book discussions are available at the library, online and through curbside pickup.

Millenials Read: Wednesday, Nov. 1, 6:30–7:30 p.m. At this no-stress book discussion, join readers in their 20s, 30s and 40s to talk about current book picks. You do not need to be reading anything to participate. A partnership between Bloomfield, Simsbury and Granby libraries and open to all. November’s meet up will take place at Tiger Belly, 9 Mill Pond Drive in Granby. Participants will be responsible for their own food and drink purchases. If special accommodations are required, please contact the library at least one week prior to the event.

Something About The Author Book Club: Monday, Nov. 6, 1:30–2:30 p.m. Discuss the novel Long Long Way by Sebastian Barry. This is a powerful novel about divided loyalties and the harsh realities of war. Barry depicts a young man struggling between the issue of Ireland’s involvement with the British army during the first world war and the battle for Irish independence. John Rusnock leads the discussion.

Sci/Fi Fantasy Book Club: Wednesday, Nov. 29, 6–7 p.m. Discuss Name of the Wind, a fantasy novel by Patrick Rothfuss. Kyothe, a magically gifted young man who grew to be the most notorious wizard in his world, has left a life of adventure and sorrow to become an innkeeper in a small town. When he rescues a scholar named Chronicler who realizes who Kyothe is, he must tell his whole story to keep Chronicler from telling the world where he is. Jim Gorman leads the discussion.

Teen Programs

Teen Mondays, Honey Heist: Monday, Nov. 20, 4–6 p.m. Grades 6–12. You and your fellow co-conspirators are on a mission to steal some honey. There are two things you must know: 1. Your plan is complex and requires precise timing. 2. You’re a BEAR! Join us for this tabletop role playing game where we’ll plan a heist and see where the dice fall!

Teen Advisory Board Meeting: Monday, Nov. 27, 6–7 p.m. Grades 7–12. Pizza served! Be a part of the Teen Advisory Board. Join TAB for a fun and exciting way to help plan teen library programs, tell us what kind of books, movies and music teens want and gain experience and credit towards community service hours. TAB members also get to volunteer at the library.

Mother Goose On The Loose: Wednesdays, Nov. 8, 15 and 22, 10:30–11 a.m. 18 months to 4 years. Preschool children with their caregivers are invited to an interactive program featuring nursery rhymes, stories and music activities that promote language development, visual literacy, social and emotional skills.
