Special Events

The Golden Age of Hollywood Through Fashion: Wednesday, April 13, 1 p.m. Presenter, Karen Antonowicz. Fashion on the silver screen during the 30s, 40s and 50s was not only glamorous, but influential. In the depression era, folks could attend movies to forget their current circumstances. The 1950s movies continued to show elegant fashions that were inspiring to audiences of that period, but the advent of television caused fashion to be split between the silver screen and the smaller TV in America’s homes. Join us as we travel through these fascinating decades and enjoy a glimpse of glamour of that golden age. Register by April 6. Cost $5.

Tulip Time Dinner: Wednesday, April 20 at 5 p.m. Sponsored by Home Helpers of the Farmington Valley. Let’s celebrate spring starting with a dinner of chicken spaghetti bake, vegetables and dessert. We are excited to have Double Trouble returning to entertain us. Register by April 13. Cost $10.

Lifetime Learning Academy

Inside Alcatraz: Wednesday, April 6, 1 p.m. Presenter, Joe Ouellette. The Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary was a maximum-security federal prison on Alcatraz Island, which operated from 1934 until 1963 and housed the nation’s most notorious and dangerous criminals. Meet those on the guest list and take a look around at this interesting bit of history. We’ll explore the genesis of the institution, its famous guests, the accommodations and the players, the routine, the food, and the odds of an escape. Great photos too. Register by March 30. The Revelation of John: Wednesdays, April 13-May 25, 10 a.m. Presenter, Skip Mission. This seven-week class will explain the future events described in the Bible book of Revelation, Chapters 4-19 including the Rapture, the judgments of the seven-year Tribulation, the Antichrist, the Mark of the Beast (666), Armageddon and Christ’s return. How is Granby’s Baptist Cemetery Connected to the First Amendment? Wednesday, April 20, 1 p.m. Presenter, Skip Mission. This historical presentation takes us from the Great Awakening’s effect on Granby in 1740, to Connecticut, to Virginia and ultimately to the First Amendment of the Constitution. Register by April 13. Smithsonian Series, Aerial America: Mondays, April 4 – 18, 1 p.m. via Zoom. Take off on a thrilling flight across America. This epic series offers rare glimpses of our nation’s most treasured landmarks, all seen from breathtaking heights. From busy cityscapes to quiet landscapes, we capture the history and the pageantry of our amazing country, which is as diverse as the people who occupy it. Sign up for one or for all. Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Thursdays at Noon. A group for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Join others, like yourself, to share friendship, ideas and tips on being a parent again. Free.

Trips

Senior Van Service and Excursions:

The Granby Senior Van provides rides for adults 60 and over. Annual donation is $10. Vehicles are accessible and lift equipped. Rides are provided for medical and personal care appointments, grocery shopping and in-town errands. Please call the office at 860-844-5350 one week in advance for scheduling.
