Granby Lions Club offers flag dedications

About 15 years ago, the Granby Lions Club decided to honor the town’s veterans and/or citizens from Memorial Day through Labor Day, just as neighboring towns were doing. To that end, the Lions sponsored the purchase of American Flags for display throughout Granby center.

Interest in this project was high, but funds were needed to purchase the flags, poles, and so forth. The club determined the best way to fund the project was to offer Granby residents the opportunity to sponsor a flag in honor of a loved one. Of the 68 flags displayed, just over half were dedicated.

During the ensuing years, Granby Lions have continued this tradition by replacing worn out flags as needed.

A recent inventory of flags and supplies determined that it was time to replace everything and start anew. The American Legion Shannon-Shattuck Post 182 assisted in the purchase of the necessary supplies and will properly dispose of the old flags.

This bulk purchase depleted our reserves, so the Granby Lions Club is again offering Granby residents the opportunity to dedicate a new flag in memory of a beloved veteran or private citizen. Donations will go towards covering these expenses now and into the future. For a donation of $100, name(s) may be placed on a flagpole and remain there in perpetuity.

The Lions will continue to work with Granby’s Public Works Department to inspect and replenish supplies when warranted. What follows is a listing of the existing dedications for 36 of the town’s flags. Because of the limited number of flags available, multiple dedications of a single flag may be necessary. We ask that you limit your dedication’s wording to “In memory of (name)” or “In honor of (name).” You may include their service branch as well.

Donation checks should be payable to Granby Lions and mailed to P.O. Box 191, Granby CT 06035.
