The Ivoryton Playhouse in Ivoryton, is kicking off its 2022 season with the world premiere of an exciting new musical by Granby resident Jeff Blaney.

The musical, Star of Freedom, explores our country’s history to illuminate its future. It tells of the chance meeting between two immigrants during Civil War times who join together to overcome racial and social oppression and make a better life for themselves in a divided young nation. Star of Freedom offers a collection of original songs that combine elements of Irish folk music with the sounds of African culture to give voice to the characters’ struggles and triumphs.

Star of Freedom is adapted from Exodus, a concept album by Blaney, who composed the music and lyrics for the production and serves as musical director. Jacqueline Hubbard is the production’s director, and the book is by Lawrence Thelen.

Star of Freedom will run from April 7 to May 1, with six shows per week. Tickets go on sale March 1 at ivorytonplayhouse.org

An accomplished musician and native of Connecticut, Blaney performs solo and in several bands throughout the Granby area, including with his brother, Rob, as The Blaney Brothers. His work spans genres from blues and rockabilly to Americana and traditional Irish music. Blaney has appeared at a variety of local events, such as the Granby Bluegrass Festival and the Sunset Concert Series.

Blaney lives in Granby with his wife, Hannah, and their two sons, Liam and Noah. Along with his creative pursuits, he enjoys being an assistant coach for his sons’ Little League Baseball team.
