Why 21: The Youth Service Bureau’s mission to address youth exposure to potentially addictive substances and behaviors.

Why is this a concern in 2022? With the legalization of marijuana and THC for recreational use as well as the legalization of online gambling, the risks to those under 21 who partake are a significant prevention concern. Because of the specific brain development occurring in the teen years, adolescents exposed to drugs, alcohol, pornography, and gambling are at a significantly higher risk of developing an addiction as adults than peers who are not exposed to these things before the age of 21.

The Youth Service Advisory Board, which provides the Youth Service Bureau with the perspectives of our community, is looking for new members to help guide our programming as we face these current issues. From youth members to senior citizens, business owners and parents, we are interested in your perspectives and insights.

The YSAB meets on the second Wednesday of the month from 4 to 5 p.m. If you are interested in checking it out, please give AnneMarie Cox a call at the Youth Service Bureau 860-844-5355.
