Granby Senior Center Re-opening

The Granby Senior Center has begun a gradual re-opening for specific classes and programs. If a program is scheduled in the building, you will find a location under the description. If it will be held via zoom, it will be noted in the title or description of the program. All in-person classes will be subject to pre-registration, social distancing and mask wearing while in the building. Programs and classes will have a strict capacity limit.

If you are a Granby Senior Center member, please register for all programs through SchedulesPlus.com/granby If you are not a member of the Granby Senior Center or you do not have access to a computer, please call 860-844-5352 to register.


Special Events 

Summer Bingo via Zoom: Thursday, June 10 at 10 a.m. Sponsored by McLean Home Care and Hospice. It’s summertime and we will be playing bingo for fun, summer-themed prizes. That could mean anything from gift cards, to outdoor living grab bags and more. Let’s celebrate the warm weather and have some fun. Register by June 3.

Strawberry Shortcake to Go: Monday, June 14, 1 to 2 p.m. at Granby Senior Center. Sponsored by Dispatch Health and Home Helpers Home Care of Farmington Valley. In celebration of Strawberry Shortcake Day, we will be packing up your own individual shortcakes to enjoy at home. Register by June 7. For current members only. Not a member? Holcomb Farm Fresh Access for Seniors: Thursdays starting June 17, 11 to 11:45 a.m. at Granby Senior Center. This highly successful program is back for another season. Enjoy fresh produce graciously donated from the Fresh Access Program through the Holcomb Farm CSA. Please bring your reusable bag. Drive-thru only. Must be a senior with paid membership. New membership cards will be given out during your first visit with us and then shown at each subsequent visit. Limit one bag per household. Call to pre-register.

Lifetime Learning Academy

Connecticut’s Early Water Mills via Zoom: Wednesday, June 16, 1 p.m. Presented by John Cilia. Water-powered mills expanded across Connecticut beginning in 1650 and spread throughout the state expanding technologies and production for 300 years. Connecticut water mills expanded to serve a world market in the mid-1800s. Please join us for this interesting presentation as Cilia highlights many of the water-powered mills that helped create the great state of Connecticut. Register by June 9.

Italian Cuisine: How to Make Perfect Risotto via Zoom: Thursday, June 24 at 1 p.m. Presented by Jonathan Rosenfield. Explore Italian cuisine as Rosenfield shows you how to make risotto. Rosenfield is a true lover of all things food with a background that includes the restaurant industry and culinary school. He will show you that with a few vegetables, rice, and cheese, you’ll be creating a meal that’s sure to delight. Register by June 17.

Hiking at Burr Pond State Park: Tuesday, June 8, 10 a.m. Judy Cooper guides this hike leaving from Burr Mountain Road, Torrington. Round trip is 2.75 miles around the pond, relatively flat, but plenty of rocks and roots—not an open trail. Pre-register required for all hikes. Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy shoes.

Blood Pressure/Blood Sugar Clinic with the Farmington Valley VNA: Thursday, June 17, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Granby Senior Center. By appointment only; call 860-844-5350 to register. Masks and social distancing required.

Support Services

Alzheimer’s Support: Caring for someone diagnosed with Alzheimer’s can be overwhelming. Contact the Alzheimer’s Association for assistance at 800-272-3900.

Ask the Attorney: The first Wednesday of the month, by appointment at the Granby Senior Center. Specializing in Elder Law. Please call 860-844-5352 to set up an appointment for a free consultation. Social distancing and masks required.

CHOICES Counseling: CHOICES provides information and assistance about Medicare and its drug coverage plans. Call 1-800-994-9422 to speak with a counselor.

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren: Thursdays at noon. A group for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. Join others to share friendships, tips and ideas on being a parent again. Free.

Senior Van Service

The Senior Vans operate Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Out-of-town medical appointments may be made no earlier than 9:30 a.m. and no later than 2 p.m. Call at least one week in advance when requesting rides for appointments. Annual van fee is $10. Call 860-844-5350 to schedule a ride or to get more information.

Exercise Classes

via Zoom and at the Granby Senior Center

New sessions for Chi Gong, Yoga and Chair Yoga will start in July.

Yoga Flow via Zoom: Mondays, 10–10:45 a.m., June 7-June 28. Four classes in the session. Led by Mary Fuller. Emphasis is given to finding a balance between flexibility and strength and exploring how, with practice, we can find increased fluidity of movement. Yoga experience is somewhat helpful but not required. Cost: $20 residents; $24 non-residents.

Cardio and Strength via Zoom: Fridays, 10–10:45 a.m., June 4-June 25. Four classes in the session.

Instructor, Mary Fuller leads this quick-paced class with cardio and a concentration on strength building. Cost: $20 residents; $24 non-residents
