Community support is essential

Jordan E. Grossman, Ed.D.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the entire community for the support you have provided our staff and students this school year.

There is no way to describe the impact your support has on our daily operations during this most challenging time. Granby Public Schools is composed of incredible educators who are always considering the social and emotional well-being of all our students.

I have heard from so many families who are grateful for all of the opportunities we are providing children this school year. We continue to strive to provide the best possible education for our students. I truly feel fortunate and proud to serve as your Superintendent of Schools.

Granby’s public schools are a treasure representing one of the best school systems in the State of Connecticut. Our students are the heart and soul of our school system. I am proud of our dedicated staff in meeting the needs of all our students and creating a positive learning environment that allows them to start fulfilling their hopes and dreams.

Wherever you go in the Granby’s schools, you will find dedicated individuals working with children to reach their highest potential. From a Kindergarten classroom where our youngest learners are learning to read, to watching our high school seniors present their Capstone Projects, one sees the foundational skills being used by students to prepare them for the next experience in their lives.

In December, the Granby Memorial High School Drama Club virtually performed a rendition of It’s a Wonderful Life. Additionally, in December, student artists performed virtually for the annual Coffeehouse. Over 200 people watched this event. We are extremely proud of our students and staff for continuing to perform during this time. Simply stated, their creativity truly overcame this pandemic.

I am excited to inform you that Granby Memorial High School is one of 16 Connecticut High Schools being honored by the CIAC with a Michaels Achievement Cup Award for the 2019-2020 academic year. The Michaels Cup Committee recognized Granby Memorial High School for an exemplary athletic program and for their willingness to subscribe to the Class Act Sportsmanship standards, empowering students to take an active role in their school climate and their continued support of community service.

Granby Memorial High School will be formally recognized during the CIAC’s virtual Sportsmanship Conference on Feb. 10. The Michaels Cup was created in the early 1980s as the brainchild of Roy Michaels, the owner of Michaels Jewelry, in an effort to recognize outstanding athletics programs. This is a wonderful recognition for our school district.

On Jan. 6, I presented the Plus One Budget for 2021-2022 to the Granby Board of Education. Each year, the Granby Board of Education develops and submits budget projections to the Board of Finance for use in the budget guidelines. At that time, the projected request was 3.71 percent over current operating costs. On March 3, at 7 p.m., the Administrative Budget will be presented to the Granby Board of Education in the High School Auditorium and via Zoom.

A Superintendent’s Community Conversation will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 24, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. via Zoom. Information will be posted on the district website one week prior to the conversation. This is a time where the community and parents/guardians can ask questions about the district. Future dates will be posted on the District Calendar.
