The Farmington Valley YMCA is excited to announce that the 50th Granby Road Race will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021. Founded by David Hildreth, Dave Bale and Dennis Lobo in May 1971, the Granby Road Race is one of Connecticut’s oldest historic events and runners have the option to register for either a 5K or 10K. The unusual feature of the 10K race that draws in area runners is that part of the course weaves through Granby’s treasured McLean’s Game Refuge.
The Farmington Valley YMCA began hosting the Granby Road Race about ten years ago and has continued to hold the race in honor of Dave Schupp, Jr., who was hit and killed by a car in 1988 when he was out for a run.
The YMCA and the Granby Road Race Committee, a volunteer-driven committee through the YMCA, are grateful to the local community for attending and sponsoring the race over the past 50 years. The Granby Road Race mission supports the mission of the YMCA and the race’s success wouldn’t be possible without the support of local businesses and individuals. The race benefits the YMCA’s Annual Campaign and the funds raised assist the YMCA to allow members of the community to access YMCA programs and services regardless of their ability to pay.
A focus of the 2021 race is highlighting and honoring the origins of the race. As such, the Granby Road Race Committee would love to hear from Granby residents if you or a loved one ran the original race in 1971 and especially if you have any photos from that race.
