Calling all student actors! Valley Student Theatre will be holding auditions for its summer 2020 musical production of The Addams Family, being staged at East Granby High School. Auditions are open to youth aged 7–18, and will be held on April 10 and 11 at East Granby Farms. Experienced and new performers alike are welcome.

Students who participate in the summer program will spend most weekdays in July learning acting, vocal performance, choreography, and general stagecraft. The day camp culminates in a run of evening and weekend performances for the public from July 30 through August 1.

While Valley Student Theatre is a new organization, its directors have deep roots in local theatre. Erin Dugan and Jenna Sheridan have directed shows in past summers for East Granby Student Theatre, which staged its final production last year. Dugan and Sheridan then paired with a group of local parents to form Valley Student Theatre, a nonprofit whose purpose is to keep the summer musical theatre tradition alive in the Granby-East Granby area.

A recent survey by National Public Radio found The Addams Family was the most popular high school musical of 2019, and Dugan is excited to bring it to the stage in East Granby. “Our high-school-aged students were thrilled when we announced this year’s show,” she recalled. “And there will be great roles for our middle-school and younger students, too.”

Sheridan added that, having grown up in theatre productions in town, she was excited every year to see the older students take the younger ones under their wings. “The amount the cast grows and bonds during that month each summer is incredible.”
