Jim Sansone L. receives award of appreciation for 47 years of service in Granby DTC from Congressman John Larson.

Members and guests of the Granby Democratic Town Committee (DTC) gathered for fun, food and friendly competition at the second annual Trivia Game Night Out, an event that raises funds for Granby DTC college scholarship awards. The event was attended by more than 80 people this year.  Award levels have grown over the years with the first scholarship of $500 awarded in 2012 increasing to two $1000 scholarships in 2017.

The Honorable John Larson, United States Representative, 1st District kicked off the evening by offering a brief update on recent events in D.C, then expressed his gratitude for all the work that is being done at the local level. Congressman Larson presented local Granby resident Jim Sansone with a certificate acknowledging his 47 years of uninterrupted service on the Granby DTC. Sansone was also presented with a gift from the Granby DTC members of a personalized Granby Christmas ornament by local Granby artist Laura Eden, showing their gratitude for his many years of service. For the second year in a row, Congressman Larson pledged a generous contribution to the scholarship program.

Throughout the evening, DTC members and friends from Granby, Hartland and Simsbury enjoyed a pot luck buffet and mingled with candidates and their representatives for several state offices. Democratic candidates for Governor in attendance were Sean Connolly, Luke Bronin and Mark Stewart. Dita Bhargava, also a candidate for Governor, did not attend but sent a donation. Candidates for Attorney General, Chris Mattei and Paul Doyle attended, and Clare Kindall sent representatives. Local Democratic candidates seeking to represent the 62nd District, Amanda Webster and Valerie Eastwood, also attended and participated in the trivia contest.

A friendly and competitive spirit guided the Trivia contest, where twelve teams presented their best answers to questions on subjects that varied from football to Valentine’s Day, food and the Olympics. After several rounds, two teams went head-to-head on four tie-breaker questions before the “Rabid Barracudas” finally won.

It was a fun-filled evening for a great cause, and the DTC scholarship committee is confident it will once again be able to expand the program. Scholarships are awarded to deserving Granby Memorial High School seniors that have demonstrated positive engagement in the political process and exemplify the mission of “Making Granby a Better Community.”
