Make a difference—volunteer!

By Carol Bressor

The 2015 Volunteer Fair can make a difference—for individuals and organizations alike. The fair will be held on Wednesday, April 15 from 4:40 to 6:30 p.m. at the Granby Senior Center. It is sponsored by the senior center and Citizens for a Better Granby/Granby Drummer.

Research shows that for individuals volunteering has many health benefits. A study by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2007, showed that the experience of volunteering or helping others leads to a sense of greater self-worth and trust, lowers mortality rates, and better physical and mental health. Volunteering can strengthen social ties that protect individuals from isolation in difficult times. Volunteering can help find a match for an individual’s skills while resulting in meaningful work.

For organizations, using volunteers can often bring projects and plans to quicker completion, which in turn can enable the organization to better serve its clients. Volunteer opportunities may be one-time, weekly, monthly or ongoing in duration.

Community organizations wishing to participate in the fair should contact Sandra Yost at 860-844-5352. Registration should be made by Tuesday, April 7.
