The newly established Special Education Committee of the Granby PTO donated buddy benches at Kelly Lane and Wells Road schools. A buddy bench promotes kindness and inclusiveness among students at play. A child sitting on the bench signifies to others: I want to play but I’m having trouble getting involved. Any child can go over and say, “Hey, come play with us.”

A donation ceremony was held on Oct. 6, at Wells School, in conjunction with the first PTO meeting of the year. According to PTO President Judy Baum-Baron, “The PTO is delighted to provide our elementary and intermediate students with a tool to communicate the desire for social engagement on the playground.”

“We are proud to partner with the Granby PTO to install these benches,” says Dr. Alan Addley, superintendent of schools. “The buddy benches are a great idea and will play an important role in ensuring all students have the opportunity to play with their peers at recess.”
The buddy bench movement is global. More information about buddy benches can be found on www.buddybench.org.
