The Granby Democratic Town Committee (DTC) is accepting applications for $1,000 scholarship awards to recognize a Granby student, or students, who best exemplify its mission, Making Granby a Better Community, and who have demonstrated engagement in the political process.

As a part of the scholarship application, students are asked to prepare an essay or multimedia presentation on the following topic:

“The second amendment of the Constitution of the United States was based on English common law and was adopted December 15, 1791. It reads ‘A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’ Consider the perspective of the original proponents of this amendment, (James Madison, James Monroe and John Adams) and then discuss your interpretation and how you think this amendment should be applied today.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, the applicant must be a Granby resident, graduating from Granby Memorial High School in 2018, and registered to vote if age 17 or older. The scholarship awards will be presented at GMHS Senior Awards night.

The scholarship application may be obtained by emailing GranbyDemocrats@gmail.com. A copy of the application is also available at the Granby Memorial High School Guidance Office.

Application deadline is Friday, May 4, to submit completed applications to GranbyDemocrats@gmail.com, or to the GMHS Guidance office.
